CD: The Spinto Band, Moonwink

The Spinto Band make perky indie rock that sounds like a circus unravelling. In Moonwink's unusual, happy humankind, barroom pianos bounce, sprightly scales twang from guitars, and drums rat-tat-tat with the energy of a Tango-fuelled toddler. Given that this is the Delaware band's one-seventh album, their exuberance is honourable. Several bursts by and by, however, and you're reaching for the pacifier. That's not to say that there's craft in the madness. Summer Grof sounds like a fabulous single, being blessed with a simple tune that burrows into the brain. The Black Flag could be a confounded Wheezer definitive, while the mournful fanfares at the start of They All Laughed, and lyrics about the momentary nature of success, intimate some nicely melancholy undercurrents. The Spinto Band should prey on them; a little more shadow against sparkle could make their sun burn even brighter.

Vilayat Khan, one of the sterling Hindustani musicians of the 20th century, was born in Gouripur in East Bengal (later Bangladesh) in August 1922. (Various early dates ar strewn throughout the literature but that is the appointment that he confirmed in 1993.) His granddad, Imdad Khan (1848-1920) and his sire Enayat Khan (1894-1938) -- Vilayat Khan gives the spelling Inayat Khan -- were renowned musicians in their lifetimes and Vilayat and his jr. brother Imrat Khan transmissible their musicalness. Their gharana is known as the Imdadkhani gharana subsequently their gramps.

He studied initially with his father. On his father's demise in 1938 his preparation became the province of his mother, Bashiran Begum, his nan, Bande Hussain Khan, and his parental uncle, Wahid Khan. Around the like menstruum Vilayat Khan began recording 78s. Peculiarly it is reported that he had to cope with abominable comparisons with his sire. Gradually he developed a style which, while acknowledging his kinsfolk's contribution, spoke with his own distinctive voice. His most outstanding contribution to his gharana's tradition is the development of what is known as a vocal style or gayaki aNG on sitar. To some degree this is a term of convenience. Other contemporary musicians were pains to modernize subservient styles which more closely resembled the human voice -- it was after all the finish of all instrumentalists to mimicker as far as possible the human voice -- and Vilayat Khan did not have a monopoly in this effort any some commentators claimed. That is not to take away from his accomplishment which was considerable and caused a sensation.

Vilayat Khan's strides in compensating for the sitar's shortcomings were huge. His career was marked by a regally consistent musical quality. An outspoken critic of low standards, he maintained levels of personal integrity that on occasion earned him the disapproval of the governance. Little of his function was in whatsoever context other than the rigorously classical one although he worked with Satyajit Ray on the soundtrack to the film Jalsaghar and the Ismail Merchant/James Ivory film The Guru. He might be summed up as a keeper -- not a quencher -- of the flame.

Ben Affleck trades acting for TV reporting in Congo

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar winner and actor Ben Affleck has taken on a new job, if only for one assignment, traveling to the war-torn eastern Congo to do a report for Thursday's edition of ABC television news program "Nightline."

Affleck has gone to the Democratic Republic of Congo three times this past year, and in an essay posted on ABC's Web site, he said he wanted to draw attention to the violence, starvation and disease in the region that kills 1,200 people a day.

"It makes sense to be skeptical about celebrity activism," wrote Affleck, 35, star of movies such as "Hollywoodland" and Oscar winner for the screenplay of "Good Will Hunting."

"There is always the suspicion that involvement with a cause may be doing more good for the spokesman than he or she is doing for the cause," Affleck said.

But Affleck said he hoped viewers could separate any reservations about his involvement from "what is unimpeachably important about this segment: the plight of eastern Congo."

Emily Lenzner, a spokeswoman for ABC News, said Affleck was not a correspondent for "Nightline," and that the program shows only one trip he took to Congo from last month.

"We basically went with a camera and a producer and just basically followed him around," Lenzner said. "It was his observations, his journey that we pretty much documented."

Accompanying Affleck were producer Max Culhane and cameraman Doug Vogt, who along with ABC journalist Bob Woodruff was injured in a 2006 roadside bomb attack in Iraq.

Steven Tyler In Rehab After Foot Surgery

Steven Tyler, who reportedly entered rehab earlier this month, said a series of surgeries and post-operative physical therapy to correct foot injuries were the reasons he checked himself into a California facility, according to a statement issued yesterday (5/29). Tyler said the pain from the surgeries was greater than he had anticipated. "The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic," he said. "I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet."The statement made no reference to Tyler's history of alcohol and drug abuse, which he apparently has had under control for decades. However, it is common for sober addicts to relapse when medical conditions warrant repetitive use of pain medications. This may not be the case with Tyler, though the rehab facility in which he is seeking treatment is known for treating alcohol and drug abuse.Tyler, who said his foot injuries resulted from his trademark athletic performance on stage, expects a full recovery. "Make no mistake," he said in the statement, "Aerosmith [ tickets ] has no plans to stop rocking. There's a new album to record, then another tour."

Hugh Grant - Grant Hurley Win Cash Payout Over Holiday Snaps

Actor HUGH GRANT and his ex-girlfriend ELIZABETH HURLEY have won $116,000 (GBP58,000) in damages for invasion of privacy, after they were photographed on holiday in a private resort in the Maldives.

Grant, model Hurley and her businessman husband Arun Nayar filed suit against photo agencies Big Pictures (U.K.) Limited and Eliot Press SARL last year (07), when snaps of the trio on holiday were published in a number of British newspapers.

Laura Tyler, the lawyer representing Grant, Hurley and Nayar, appeared at London's High Court on Thursday morning (15May08), when she told Mr Justice Eady that the pictures had been taken covertly and without her clients' knowledge. She also argued that the claimants had chosen the resort because it offered them complete privacy and seclusion.

She told the court: "It has been most upsetting for the claimants to have their privacy invaded by these defendants."

The photos were later printed in the News of the World and The Mail on Sunday newspapers, as well as a number of celebrity magazines.

In addition to the cash for damages, the claimants will receive some money towards their legal costs from the two photo agencies, and agency bosses apologised for any distress their actions may have caused.

Further contributions will also be made by the News of the World's publisher News Group Newspapers, and Associated Newspapers, which prints The Mail on Sunday.
